When I ask "when is the next movie showing?" In my head, I've always believed it to be a compound noun "movie showing". And I use "showing" as a noun referring to a movie. "The showings are listed on Fandango." etc. But I can't say that I've ever really replaced "movie" with "show" specifically.

I often call a movie a "show" and a tv show a "movie." I don't know why I mix em up but it happens. eh..

I've done it, but it's a habit I picked up from my parents (who got it from theirs.) "Let's go to the show!" Is how it ends up.

Only if it's good. "It was quite a show!"

Or extremely bad. "Yeah that was quite the show." (Extremely rare occasions I hardly hate any sort of film.)

Just kidding I don't really, but now that I know it is an illogical pet peeve for a lot of people, I shall now say. "LET'S GO TO THE SHOW!" when I say we are going to the movies.
