I've been catching up on Marvel since DC announced their reboot, and I wanted to share this little title with the few of you who actually read my journal entries. It doesn't boast the famous cast of a regular Avengers title, or even carry any memorable sidekicks. However, it's currently one of my top favorite superhero comics and here's why.
I recently caught up on Avengers Academy (issue 14.1) and although its premise inherently caters to younger audiences it feels as if it's currently Marvel's most mature and sophisticated title. This is coming from a guy who's following like 15 series.
When first picking up a book like this you think: "Meh, probably just another series about a bunch of super powered teenagers trying to be heroes. Guessing love triangles, the whole "growing up" theme, brick loads of pop-humor, unrelatable larger-than-life scenarios etc." Like.. Runaways, Young Avengers, Teen Titans and every other comic of the genre. Right?
It's really not or at least AA is often more than that. Despite the huge focus on the drama of being young it never overwhelms us with the frivolous mediocrities of stereotypical "teen angst". This is further defined by a cast of adults who themselves aren't the brightest beacons of Marvel history; Hank Pym, Quicksilver, Robbie Baldwin; all individuals who have had questionable pasts to deal with.
I find every issue incredibly engaging, not only because these "kids" are dealing with things like death, the very idea of right and wrong, isolation, manipulation etc. but also because it's on a backdrop of teachers who aren't sure of their answers and methods themselves. In the end it's often a very open, thought provoking series without the kind pandering dialogue you'd expect.
I guess I'm writing this because of how disgustingly underrated AA is and the idea of it being cancelled is looming around every corner. The likely scenario is that 10 years from now no one will even remember most of these characters, how utterly depressing.
I know there was a recent surge of interest for American comics these past couple of years, most of which stem from DC but now with their reboot I hope some of you could find the time and turn your heads towards Marvel. So if you like reading about teenage heroes, "unlikeable" characters, or damaged people. Please give Avengers Academy a try, it's still easy to get into with less than 20 issues out so far. :]

My current Marvel lists is X-23, Magneto not a hero, Victor Von Doom, Uncanny X-force, X-men(I'm liking the idea of the Doom/Magneto team up.. I want to see how schism will play with vampire Jubilee).
I dropped all my DC titles... I loved Cassandra Cain and Duela Dent. But, they killed one and down played the other. ..
What is your pull list?
Reading:
Avengers
Avengers Academy
New Avengers
Secret Avengers
Daken: Dark Wolverine
Fear Itself
Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt
Fear Itself: Wolverine
FF (Future Foundation)
Invincible Iron Man
X-men: Schism
Ultimate Comics: Fallout
Ultimate Comics: Ultimates
Ultimate Comics: Spider-man
Ultimate Comics: X-men
Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye
Trying to get into/catch-up:
Avengers: Children's Crusade
Iron Man 2.0
Batman: Gates of Gotham
X-23
Uncanny X-Force
Amazing Spider-man
And basically picking up any of DC's reboot #1's that have a Batverse character.
I'm also reading some older Ultimate Marvel stuff like X-men & Fantastic Four.
I'm waiting for the TPB of children's Crusade. Before getting it.
The gates of Gothom was :S for me. Because, I brought it mainly for Cassandra Cain. But, the end was real nice.
I feel awkward with any avengers besides Academy. I feel as if it's not character based. Since the characters are well established. So It's like Action and hitting you fast.
How do you store all these comics.
and how far back are you in X-men are you living in the 80s?
I recently met the artist, Jim Cheung and his work really caught my eye. Mostly reading Children's Crusade for that, personally not a Young Avengers fan ;x
You're right, most of the Avengers titles aren't very character driven. I mean, perhaps New Avengers often gives Luke and Jessica's marriage an intimate perspective but that's really about it. For that sorta material I just suggest grabbing singular character titles since the whole concept behind an "Avengers" title is giant team-ups. (Even more so cross-over events like Fear Itself)
I'm reading old Ultimate Marvel, it's mostly early-year-2000 stuff.
I'll look into singular stuff like you suggested.
Ultimate seems like a interesting spin. Must be expensive though.
Thanks for answering all my questions and being amazing.
If you end up really liking it, buy it!
Let me know if you want to know more, I can send you a note and give you details.
I think you may be right about CBR. I don't know how many times I brought Crossovers. Hoping to see my favorite character do great stuff. Then they are nothing but, wallpaper..
